IBM InterConnect Reveals Open Source Opportunities with WebRTC

March 02, 2016

WebRTC presents the promise of transforming collaboration as we know it, but this exciting proposition still faces hurdles. The bar is set high, and the industry will need to work together, standing on the shoulders of others to achieve expected results. Those at the forefront of enabling this burgeoning area of innovation can serve as an invaluable resource for Web and mobile developers alike.

At the recently concluded IBM InterConnect event, Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM, Brian Pulito and Dialogic’s Senior Director of Product Marketing Alan Percy presented a session titled, “Innovate Fast, Run Steady with WebRTC Open Source and IBM Middleware.” The session provided attendees with WebRTC open source samples, live demos, SDKs as well as a cloud-based developer sandbox.

Providing an inside look at WebRTC from a mobile and Web developer perspective, the session explored combing Rtcomm open source and IBM middleware to create your own WebRTC development sandbox in addition to leveraging Node.js with WebSphere Liberty to integrate WebRTC with the IoT.

The CommsDevZone Podcast also recently had the opportunity to catch up with Pulito and talk about real time communications. He explained that while, “IBM’s DNA is more on the Web side, I saw an opportunity to get into more Web real time communication things.” The potential alone was enough for development to begin and Pulito notes that today, “it’s an evolving strategy.”

In order to get its feet wet in the pools of WebRTC, IBM sought out Twilio to discuss their trunking service, which lead to a discussion on the need for a media server and the fact it’s been working with Dialogic now for some time on a transcoding gateway.

A particular area of interest for Pulito is the role of cognitive moving forward and how we can connect cognitive services in the cloud.

One use case offered was a human to machine interface – queue Watson. With Watson, the dev team at IBM was able to create a self-service environment where Watson can provide resolution. And in an instance where Watson is incapable of providing a solution, the caller is routed to the proper agent.

Big Blue also brought in none other than Sir Elton John to play at the event and I can’t help but ask that WebRTC doesn’t go breaking operator’s hearts.  To take the correlation further:  While web-based real time communication brings with it the potential to serve as the “Rocket Man” for collaboration, the industry still needs to say 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ and reach the ‘Emerald City’ before it can reap the spoils.
